“The day will come when history will speak. But it will not be the history, which will be taught in Brussels, Paris, Washington or the United Nations… Instead, Africa will write its own history, and in both north and south it will be a history of glory and dignity”.
Excerpt from the Letter from Thysville Prison to Mrs Lumumba.
Did you know that there is a day set aside by the African Union to celebrate Women of Africa?
And do you know that this day is older than the African Union itself?
Did you also know that since independence up until today, we have had a total of 40 women in the topmost political leadership positions in 23 of 55 African countries?
By topmost position, we refer to Africa’s 11 Female Presidents, 15 Vice Presidents, 1 Deputy President, 1 vice president, 8 Prime Ministers, 1 chairwoman of the National Constructional Council, and the African Union.
Welcome to July 31st, the African Union’s “Africa Women’s Day” established in 1962.
For the first time this year, African women from the continent and the diaspora are taking the lead to celebrate this historical day.
Because the origin of this day is political, this July 31st celebration will spotlight, feature, celebrate, and honour African women's legacy on political leadership since independence.
The goal of this event is to spotlight Africa’s post-independent female political pioneers, create awareness of their political legacy, and honour them for their foresight and boldness.
It is also a contribution to the International Decade of People of African Descend (2015-2024), AU’s Agenda 2063, and a formal acknowledgement and celebration of the contribution of African women to the political history of Africa and the world.
